The Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank is a non-profit society, operated by volunteers, who provide their services at no charge to the society. Its specific and primary purpose is to supply food to needy individuals and families with assessed needs. The Food Bank has been in operation in Kimberley since 1985. Needy clients from Kimberley and surrounding area recieve food hampers after submitting an application. The 2009 statistics as of our fiscal year July 31 are as follows. Total number of regular food hampers distributed 768, 1830 people were assisted. Emergency hampers 374, 985 people were assisted. 43% of the people helped were children. Total cost of the food hampers for the 10 month period ending July 31 is $51,300. The Food Bank relies heavily on donations from the public as well as service organizations and businesses. Many local groups, churches and schools hold fundraising events, which greatly benefit the Food Banks ability to supply much needed food. The Food bank this year lost our largest contributor of funds, when the organizers of the highly successful Kokanee Open Golf Tournament was cancelled. Although many fundraising activities are initiated and operated by the Food Bank directors and volunteers, it has been a struggle keeping up with the high demand for food hampers this year. We are very pleased that the Chamber has chosen the Food Bank as the recipient off profits from your golf tournament. Stan Salikin President |
